The Tesco Ireland Charity of the Year 2007 Special Project - The St Michael's B Ward

Through the TESCO Charity of the Year campaign and the fantastic support of Tesco staff and customers we were able to fund the redevelopment of the St Michaels ‘B' Ward at Temple Street Children's University Hospital. This ward cares for neo-natal patients, premature babies along with babies and infants under the age of 18 months. These infants may have long-term debilitating illnesses, or be in need of surgical and/or medical care.

Until recently the unit consisted of 13 small cubicles, sized 8ftx 7ft which was not the optimum environment for patients, parents and staff alike. Before the redevelopment large pieces of technical equipment restricted the space available in each cubicle for treatment. When the medical team entered the cubicle, in most cases the parents had to leave their child to allow for much needed treatment to take place. As you can imagine, this placed undue strain on already concerned and stressed parents.

Temple Street Children's University Hospital, as the 2007 Tesco Ireland Charity of the Year, has redeveloped this ward, improved parent facilities and ensured the facilities provided by the ward itself match the care and service provided by the staff.

This has been a life-changing gift - a lasting legacy from Tesco Ireland staff and customers to the children of Ireland who are cared for at Temple Street Children's University Hospital.

On Thursday 29th January 2009 this ward was officially opened and will shortly begin to recieve its first patients.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make this possible.
