Half Marathon to raise funds for Temple Street

Aer Arann Islands are gearing up for a major fundraising effort this April, when they will once again support the annual Aer Arann Islands Half Marathon, in an effort to raise much needed funds for Temple Street Children’s University Hospital.

Celebrating its 12th year, this unique event has been an outstanding success, and Aer Arann Islands expect 2012 to be no exception. With a maximum number of entrants limited to 150, participants are encouraged to get their names down and entry forms in as soon as possible.

The Half Marathon has successfully raised funds that have made a real difference, last year enabling Temple Street Children’s University Hospital to purchase vital pieces of equipment for the Neurosurgery department with a combined cost of €120,000.

With the fundraising this year focused on two ICU Specification Patient Monitoring Units for the Intensive Care Department, Angela McNulty, Special Events Manager at Temple Street CUH, is excited to be working once again with Aer Arann Islands, “This is a truly special fundraising event which we are delighted to be involved with. A gathering of friends old and new join together to experience the magic that is Inis Mor, for Temple Street Children’s University Hospital. We have been very lucky to have the team in Aer Arann Islands, its fundraising committee and the people of Inis Mor in our book of friends.”

This year the fundraising target will be €650 per participant, with an initial non-refundable deposit of €200 to be submitted. The deposit of €200 will form part of the overall €650 – which includes return flights to the Island, two nights Bed & Breakfast, two evening meals, Temple Street Aer Arann Islands Half Marathon merchandise and more importantly the prestigious medal of achievement.

With the event fast approaching
Padraig O’ Ceidigh, Managing Director, Aer Arann Islands, is proud to be involved and believes the cause is as important as ever, “We are absolutely delighted to be helping Temple Street Children’s University Hospital once again this year. The weekend is unique for participants as they get to enjoy every element that makes the Aran Islands so special. Plenty of craic is to be had, whether you walk, jog or run, while also raising much needed funds for such a worthy cause.”

With such a distinguished event Aer Arann Islands are delighted to welcome back many previous participants each year. Mark Brennan, Wexford, is already looking forward to this year’s event, "To visit the warm hospitable people of Inis Mor is a joy; to visit their homes, their Island and it's fantastic surroundings is a must; running and fundraising for one of the most incredible hospitals in the world is both challenging and fulfilling; Put all of this together and you get Aer Arann Island's Half Marathon... Can't wait!”

Temple Street Children’s University Hospital & The Fundraising Office

Temple Street Children's University Hospital was established in 1872 as a hospital for the poor children of Dublin. Now under the care of The Sisters of Mercy, it is one of the major paediatric hospitals catering for children from all over the country.

There is over 1000 skilled and dedicated staff at Temple Street, including 76 consultants. As a teaching hospital, it is one of the leading educators of paediatric nurses in Ireland and provides medical training for doctors at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Annually, there are over 130,000 attendances by children from every part of Ireland and the hospital has the country's biggest paediatric casualty unit with over 50,000 attending Accident and Emergency.

Temple Street leads the way across a variety of medical specialities. It is the national centre responsible for screening newborn babies for metabolic and genetic disorders. It is also the national centre for neurological, eye, craniofacial, kidney, airways and ENT disorders in children. The national meningitis reference library is also based in Temple Street. In addition, the Hospital provides specialised family support units in areas such as child sexual abuse and bereavement counselling and houses the National Sudden Infant Death Register.

The Fundraising Office was established to raise awareness and funding for projects within Temple Street Children's University Hospital. Temple Street continues to rely on external support to assist it in the purchase of vital equipment and to help establish and fund research to ensure that the best service possible is provided to the children in its care.

The fundraising office works in close partnership with the Hospital and through a rigorous consultation process, funds are allocated for the purchase of equipment, the development of new services, the redevelopment of facilities and the funding of life saving research projects at the hospital.

Funds this year will go towards the purchase of vital equipment for the hospital. With your support we can ensure that the children in our care have the best possible chance of getting better. The many ways in which your support will help the children of Temple Street include…

·         Funding the most up to date treatment and equipment

·         Improving the standard of facilities in our hospital

·         Providing accommodation for parents and families

·         Developing support services for the children in our care and their families
